Founded in 1882, the South Canterbury Hunt brings together riders of all levels, celebrating tradition, community, and supporting local causes like the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Who Are We?
Founded in 1882, the South Canterbury Hunt is proud to hunt across the picturesque landscapes of the South and Mid Canterbury districts, ranging from the Ashburton River in the north to the Pareora River in the south, and inland to the Mackenzie Basin.
We cater to all riders who love to explore open country, whether it's the thrill of the chase or the more relaxed enjoyment of riding over farmland. Hunting is a thrilling and privileged sport, made possible only through the generosity of the landowners who allow us access to their properties. We are deeply grateful for their support.
The South Canterbury Hunt is home to a pack of approximately 35 harrier hounds. We host a hunt or “meet” once or twice a week throughout the season, which runs from March to mid-July, offering riders a chance to experience the excitement and camaraderie of the hunt.
Meet the Team
The Flying Fillies Hunt was founded in 2023 by Viana Fallaver and Elizabeth Beeby, both members of the South Canterbury Hunt, as a premier women's equestrian hunt event that welcomes riders of all levels. Viana envisioned a unique day for women who love hunting, creating an event that caters to riders of all levels and celebrates the strength and spirit of female equestrians.
As the first all-female hunting event in the South Island, The Flying Fillies has grown into a premier women's equestrian hunting event, blending tradition and camaraderie with a strong commitment to supporting the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, donating 10% of all profits to this vital cause.
Liz, known for her exceptional teamwork, joined Viana’s mission to turn this vision into the successful brand it is today. Together with incredible support from the entire South Canterbury Hunt family, they have built a community of both men and women working together to bring the dream to life.
The Flying Fillies Hunt is truly a team effort, and the South Canterbury Hunt is proud to uphold the Flying Fillies brand and its reputation. Over the past two years, we have proudly donated $6,075 to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
